IBC Innovation Awards

The IBC Innovation Awards celebrate the partnership between a broadcaster or production company and technology suppliers that push for and deliver the quality, creativity and accessibility of content to the audience. The application of the latest technology in the real-world lies at the heart of the IBC Innovation Awards and this year this translated into making content more engaging for viewers, offering new functionality in delivery and discovery, and helping creators work more efficiently.

There are three categories in the IBC Innovation Awards programme, for the best applications of technology in content creation, content management and content delivery, each reflects the way that technological advances are boosting the creativity and efficiency of the content industry.

Exhibition Stand Design

Helping visitors find the technologies they require from the 1,600+ IBC exhibitors is a challenge. We play our part in the way we lay out the halls by theme, and the exhibitors play their part by designing stands which guide the visitor and showcase their products.

A dedicated team of judges toured the entire exhibition, looking carefully at every stand and chose those which they regarded as outstanding in terms of accessibility, clarity and image.

There are three IBC Exhibition Design Awards: for the Most Imaginative Use of Shell Scheme Space, and for the Best Smaller and Larger Free-Design Stands.

Best Conference Paper

The IBC Conference, with its important exchange of ideas and opinions, is at the very heart of IBC. Within the conference, the technical papers programme is seen as the most important global arena to unveil the latest in cutting edge research.

The Technical Papers Committee provided a peer review of every paper to be presented. From their deliberations they also chose the single paper which best combines innovative thinking and clarity of presentation, with the author receiving the IBC Best Conference Paper Award.

The winner of the IBC2016 Best Conference Paper award went to a paper entitled 'WIB – A New System Concept for Digital Terrestrial Television'. Authors of the paper are Erik Stare of Teracom in Stockholm, Dr Jordi Giménez of Universitat Politècnica de València in Spain and Dr Peter Klenner of Panasonic Europe, based in Frankfurt.

Judges Prize

Past winners of the Judges' Prize include Stereoscopic 3D coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and DNA's Single frequency networks for HD with DVB-T2, which was awarded in 2011.

This year's Judges' Prize went to NASA for chronicling the exploration of space, for collaborating with film-makers, for continuing to make the content available and for advancing the science and craft of imaging.

Special Award

From time to time, IBC makes a special award to a project, a person or a programme which has gone the extra mile and achieved something truly remarkable.

Past examples have included the NHK development of Super Hi-Vision, Sky Television’s 3D coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and in 2011 Atlantic Productions’ remarkable documentary Flying Monsters 3D with Sir David Attenborough.

This year's Special Award went to SMPTE to celebrate their 100 year history. “The core work of SMPTE, around standards for interoperability, is as vital today as it has ever been. As one of the partner bodies which make up IBC, SMPTE is also critical to guiding our events forward, another reason that we should be celebrating this 100th birthday” said Michael Crimp, CEO of IBC.
