IBC Innovation Award for Content Delivery: 2016 Winner and Finalists
Winner - BT Sport
Project Title: BT Sport Ultra HD
- Timeline Television
- Chyron Hego
To date BT Sport have successfully produced and delivered over 60 events including UEFA and Premier League football, FA Cup, European Rugby, Moto GP, Squash and NBA basketball. BT Sport have delivered continuous Ultra HD production innovation with the increased use of shared camera’s and single truck production and the introduction of specialist camera’s and radio links. To achieve this BT pioneered an entire end to end Ultra HD ecosystem. We have learnt plenty in our first season of broadcasting in Ultra HD, for example, additional detail of 4k capture enables different techniques to be used in filming live sport, for example, shooting wider with less cuts to allow the viewer to watch a game as if they were at the stadium, seamlessly. The proposition to date has been very favourably received in the market and at a price point that puts premium content, delivered at the highest possible quality that in-home technology can display today, within reach of the mass market. Customer feedback, especially on social media, is extremely positive with regards the quality of the output.
Highly Commended - UEFA
Project Title: Next Generation Services
The evolution of the sport media landscape – even if anchored on solid live event, rights-based models – is pushing the limit for many broadcasters; the role of sport federations and leagues is evolving with the landscape, by providing new services that support the shift.
The Next Generation Services (NGS) project innovates traditional host broadcasting and provides the UEFA media rights-holders with access to exclusive content that is already ‘packaged’ in digital-ready format, and that comes in a modular service delivery model.
The Next Generation Services (NGS) maximise both ends: fans experience and engagement as well as the value of sports rights.
Digital and Broadcast sports firm deltatre works to bring significative innovation in the sports business across digital, broadcast and mobile by putting its 30+ years’ experience with creativity and bright technologies to drive sport engagement across multiple-platforms. The company nowadays services over 40 sports disciplines and is directly involved in the world’s top competitive events with major broadcasters, federations, leagues, sponsors, clubs and sports organisations.
Highly Commended - Swisscom TV
Project Title: Content Discovery
Swisscom is ready for a future where live TV will only focus on sports, events and programmes that are popular on social media. The rest will be on demand.
The challenge was helping viewers navigate thousands of programmes and movies. To do so, Swisscom developed a breakthrough user experience using ThinkAnalytics’ recommendations engine to suggest personalised content and offer lists of popular content organised by genre.
“Replay Guide” went live in summer 2015. Its innovative design makes it easy for users to browse all TV content aired over the past week. It offers a choice of 30,000 programmes at any one time, plus the full linear schedule and VOD catalogue.
It is possibly the most complex system worldwide in terms of features, yet has an intuitive and simple user navigation experience and supports this functionality seamlessly across four languages.
It is big data in action with huge volumes of data being analysed continuously for full personalisation and over 1,000 lists of content categories generated every day.
Swisscom’s creativity sets a new benchmark by giving audiences an easy way to enjoy TV. Its 14.2% subscriber base increase in 2015 shows this is working.
