Mike Armstrong is a senior R&D engineer at BBC R&D in Manchester. He joined BBC Radio in 1982 after studying electronic engineering and computer science at UCL, moving to BBC Local Radio, he eventually became Area Engineer at Bristol where he installed and ran the BBC’s first ever digital server-based radio playout system.

He joined BBC R&D in 1999 where he has worked on access services, speech audibility, capacity planning, video quality and advanced video and audio formats including high-frame-rate television. He is particularly interested in human perception and how it relates to the issues of perceived quality.
