Awards Categories

The IBC Awards celebrate those who have made a real contribution and whose careers have changed our industry. There are several categories in which people or organisations can be nominated:

IBC Innovation Awards

Unique in the sense that they recognise how suppliers and customers work together to create something truly innovative, the innovation awards celebrate the application of technology in bringing creative, commercial or operational benefits to the end user.

They are divided into three categories for the most innovative projects in:

  • content creation
  • content management
  • content delivery

There is also a fourth award which is in the gift of the international judging panel. The Judges’ Prize is given to a project which in their opinion best represents outstanding collaboration to achieve an important and innovative end result. It may be drawn from the nominations for the other Innovation Awards or the judges may select another project which has led the industry in its creative, technical or commercial imagination.

Entry for the 2010 Innovation Awards has now closed, but if you want to find out what's required for submitting an entry next year, view the Innovation Awards Entry Criteria.

IBC International Honour for Excellence

The highest honour is reserved for the individual or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to the creative, commercial or technical advance of our industry, over an extended period, and on a global scale. Past winners include Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks Animation SKG and Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple.

IBC Special Award

From time to time IBC presents a special award to honour a particular achievement in the application of technology, which does not fit into any of the regular categories but which nonetheless deserves recognition at the highest level.

In 2010 two special awards will be presented, to two very different projects.

Amidst growing concern about the level of pollution in the river Tiete, TV Globo in Brazil commissioned a device they called Flutuador. This floated down the river, tracking and mapping the pollution, and sending its findings back to the newsroom. The resulting coverage forced the government into action on cleaning up the Tiete.

BSkyB, the satellite broadcaster in the UK and Ireland, has seized the stereoscopic 3D initiative and developed the technology to support the world’s first commercial 3D television channel, Sky 3D. To do this it had to solve not just technical challenges but develop the production guidelines to allow its partners to create a broad range of new programmes to take advantage of the medium.

IBC Exhibition Design Awards

With more than 1,300 exhibitors at IBC2010, helping visitors find the stands they need is a very important consideration. The exhibition layout plays a big part, but the designer of each stand also has a role.

A good stand design will show flair in creating spaces that are accessible, put the focus on the demonstrations of products and services, and support the exhibitor’s brand values. All of this goes to make not just the individual stand attractive and functional, it helps make the whole exhibition easy to navigate and welcoming for the visitor.

That is why IBC recognises the importance of good exhibition design with a group of three awards: for free design stands over 100 square metres, free design stands up to 100 square metres, and for best use of shell scheme space.

There is no nomination process: the judges tour the entire exhibition looking for what catches their eye, what is functional and what welcomes the visitor. Find out who wins at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday 12 September.

IBC Conference Award

The papers sessions at IBC remain the world's leading forum for the presentation and development of the latest research in electronic media technology. Recognising the best of the best, the papers committee selects the paper that they believe best matches original content with clarity of presentation. Proposals for papers are submitted earlier in the year and are carefully evaluated by a committee of experts who consider each one for innovative content.
