New Technology Campus

The New Technology Campus (NTC) is where innovation becomes reality, allowing attendees a glimpse into the future and the directions the industry may take as technology evolves and progresses.

The NTC regularly attracts an international gathering of researchers from some of the foremost companies and academic institutions in the world, and 2010’s list of exhibitors is no exception. Highlights include:

3D4YOU will be demonstrating the 3D4YOU broadcast chain equipment, featuring realtime capture, production and transmission of the 3D4YOU data format – which contains information about the depth of objects allowing viewers to adjust the 3D depth effect according to their personal viewing preferences – over IP with realtime reception and display on both glasses-free and glasses-aided 3D displays.

The MyMedia project will be demonstrating recommender systems for audio/visual content and reporting the results of their recent field trials. The systems use state-of-the-art recommender algorithms and a shared source software framework for recommender systems developed within the project.

The ENGINES project (Enabling Next Generation NEtworks for broadcast Services) aims at constituting a Task Force to support development of the Digital Video Broadcasting-Next Generation Handheld (DVB-NGH) standard. In addition ENGINES will provide means for the verification and validation of advanced features of Digital Video Broadcasting – 2nd Generation Terrestrial (DVB-T2) standard and verification and validation for the coming DVB-NGH standard. Demonstrations of both will feature on their stand.

NoTube (notube.tv) is a European research project which will demonstrate first prototypes of the future of television, which will be semantic and social. One demo will show a multi-device personalised EPG with semantic recommendations. The other will show how a viewer's activity on the Social Web can inform and guide their TV viewing.

Japan’s Burton Inc will showcase Super Real Vision, a technology that draws 3D images in true 3D space by plotting numbers of self-illuminant dots in mid-air simultaneously using the company’s patented laser technology.

There is also a historical perspective at this year’s NTC courtesy of A celebration of a century and a half of 3D imaging. Expect a number of 3D images and viewers from the 1870s to the 1970s, and an anaglyph (red-green glasses) display of some of the images, along with clips from classic 3D movies such as ‘It Came from Outer Space’. There will also be cameras, literature, and instruction on how to make 3D images simply and cheaply with modern equipment.

NTC demonstrations today are often the hit products of IBC in the future. This makes it an essential part of the IBC experience and visitors will leave the Campus with new ideas that can really help them or their businesses, as well as a valuable insight into future – and current – technology trends.
