"Providing the platform for serendipity to take place in business is a very powerful concept, for it has the potential to form new ways of looking at things, to promote new thinking and to create opportunities in the marketplace. That's why IBC is so important in the current climate. The show encourages the convergence of ideas and technologies in the marketplace, allowing attendees to share in and debate their application in the real world. Through this lens, the show continues to magnify a positive image for the future - a view that I share in based on my own discussions with young people every day.” Jeremy Barr, Professor of Broadcasting and Convergent Media at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication.

Student enterprise

At IBC, we want everyone that contributes to our industry to be part of it, so we need to ensure students and young engineers – our future industry leaders – are always excited and inspired by the activities at our event. That’s why IBC2009 employed college students to participate in the running of the IBC2009 conference. By immersing themselves in the conference, exhibition, and the new Production Village in Hall 9, they gained invaluable insight into the visceral mechanics of the industry.

Professor David Crawford, IBC Conference Chairman, said: “The spotlight in 2009 was on young engineers and new enterprises – the creativity that we see being brought back into the marketplace and how innovation and enterprise are changing the landscape in the communications and media industries.”

And while IBC’s partners sponsor a number of students to attend the show - for example, by giving financial support for flights to Amsterdam, accommodation and free conference passes -
IBC offered an 80% discount to students on standard conference ticket prices.

The Royal Television Society - one of IBC’s founding partners - sponsored two students via its southern centre to make a fly-on-the-wall video at this year’s show. For a true student perspective on IBC2009, take a look at their efforts here (YouTube version) or here (Vimeo version).

“It [the conference] gave me a real taste of the broadcast industry” David Christmas, Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication
