Oceanocam

OceanocamProject: Oceanocam high-definition underwater camera
End user: Océanopolis, Brest, France
Supplier: Boom Audio & Video, Oceanic Pictures and Fougerolle

Underwater filming experts Océanopolis wanted to find a way of capturing high quality video at great depths, both for movies and television and for scientific research, which was quick to deploy and cost-effective. Working with Boom Audio & Video they developed Oceanocam.

This puts a high definition camera, together with lights to penetrate the deep-sea darkness, into a sealed aluminium structure. For maximum flexibility the camera is fitted with a zoom lens and mounted on a pan and tilt head. The submersible structure can work at depths of up to 500 metres, and feeds its pictures to the host ship via a rugged fibre optic cable. On the surface a laptop provides all the control needed, and images are stored on a local disk array.

“This recognition of our initiative encourages us in discovering more and more about biodiversity on behalf of everyone,” said Philippe Coyault of Océanopolis. “The new pictures of the underwater world will help scientists raise awareness for the protection of the oceans.”
