Project: Seamless repurposing of video content in new media channels
End user: Mediaset Group
Supplier: TXT Polymedia
Leading Italian commercial broadcaster Mediaset recognised that its audience is becoming fragmented over a variety of channels and delivery platforms, and needed a strategic approach to serve them, wherever and whenever they needed to.
“It is great to be on the shortlist of candidates at the IBC2009 awards,” said Marco di Concetto, head of new media and infrastructures at Videotime, part of the Mediaset group. “As part of its strategic path to tapeless, file-based broadcast quality productions, Mediaset discovered the potential of such an innovative solution, and is proud to be given the opportunity to present it here.”
The solution, developed with Mediaset by TXT Polymedia, records each channel as its DVB MPEG-2 transport stream. It then gives multiple users access to the content from their desktops, allowing them to set up live re-broadcasting over online and (potentially) mobile platforms, package the content ready for video on demand access, reuse the content in other programmes and even print to DVD.
The result is a fast and efficient way of serving viewers, but also a means of capturing and analysing audience behaviours to help develop new services in future.
Or, as Francesca Castelli, production co-ordinator of the news parody programme Striscia la Notizia, put it, the new system is “a precious working instrument, enabling our satirical programme to produce its editions dramatically faster and with video quality never seen before. We are pleased to be enthusiastic testimonials of the project.”
