Project: Metro - media management for television, radio and online services
End user: Yleisradio Oy (YLE), Helsinki, Finland
Supplier: Blue Order Solutions, TietoEnator Broadcasting IT (TEBIT)
As a national broadcaster, YLE of Finland has more than 50 years of archive, on film, video and audio tape, computer files, music and the printed word: 350,000 tapes and reels, and more than one million objects in the music and radio archives. And of course these numbers are growing fast.
To make best use of its archives, and to improve its business processes in the future, YLE commissioned a unified asset management and workflow system, called Metro, developed in association with Blue Order Solutions. The result is improved programme quality because of the ease of access to all YLE’s assets, and substantial cost savings and efficiency gains through better workflows, fewer dubs of material, and reduced archive preservation costs.
“The good progress and innovations in the project come from the fact that before we started we produced a very careful analysis of our concurrent business workflows,” said Mika Lavonen, head of television operations at YLE. “Blue Order has been a good partner to have these discussions with, and together we have produced the roadmap for YLE’s media asset management. YLE is moving away from video tape and acquisitions, as the on-air producing of tv-programs such as subtitling and dubbing has shifted onto the METRO-platform."
