Opening the IBC conference is YouTube head of EMEA Cécile Frot-Coutaz in conversation with former Brave Bison chief executive and Warner Bros TV Production UK chief executive Claire Hungate.

Frot-Coutaz is in charge of the YouTube business, strategy and content partnerships in the complex and ever-changing EMEA region. She is set to ignite strong debate on audience changes to consumption, YouTube’s business strategy and enhancements to the platform and its contribution to the industry.

Global Business Gamechangers: Where’s the money coming from?

In a tough, competitive media market choosing the right business model is crucial. Game-changing media businesses are developing new strategies for engaging directly with consumers, analysing data, cooperating with competitors and creating new revenue streams. The Global Business Gamechangers debate will feature speakers from Vice, Pluto TV and Bauer Media.

Experts will debate which business models work best in the new digital media market, ways to compete with the FAANGs as well as creative direct-to-consumer businesses and innovating with advertising.

IEEE: Filling in the gaps – technologies to support new broadcast infrastructures

The transition to new broadcast systems is dependent on major standards areas such as compression and transmission. But successful deployment requires a range of peripheral technologies. In this IEEE session, speakers from Symes TV Consulting, IRT, Televisionary Consulting and Merill Weiss Group will look examine three relevant areas including a role for 5G in supporting new capabilities, the issue of security in Studio-to-Transmitter links, and new “network-friendly” precision timing systems.

From glasses-free mobile 3D TV to 5G-powered interactive media experiences, the Future Zone is the place to experience bold new concepts and cutting-edge technologies.

This year’s Future Zone has been curated to provide some practical answers to burgeoning questions across three main areas: new content, new channels and new concepts.

Ahead of much-anticipated 8K sports broadcasts in 2020, Japan’s NHK will introduce the world’s first 8K satellite broadcasting system.

Several Horizon 2020 collaborative projects focusing on media accessibility will be showcased, including a photorealistic 3D human avatar for signing from Content4All.

Aximmetry will introduce its virtual studio technology, which aims to further democratise production by enabling the creation of high-end, real-3D virtual studio environments on a budget.

Budapest-based startup OnLoops has developed a SaaS platform for broadcasters and TV channels that allows them to address, engage and retarget viewers by offering appealing second-screen activities.

While, NTT will show its latest drone technologies, including a blade-free drone, which is propelled by ultrasonic vibrations that require only helium to stay afloat and remain airborne for weeks at a time.

Top tip for IBC2019: Free travel to and from IBC

IBC2019 attendees can take advantage of free travel to and from the show and around the city of Amsterdam.

IBC has partnered with the city’s transport network GVB to provide a free transport pass for attendees, allowing travel via the city’s tram and metro network during IBC2019.

A free 5-day transport pass will be available from the IBC information points and will be valid for travel between 13 and 17 September.

The pass is valid on the Amsterdam Noord/Zuid metro line which takes just 8 minutes from Central Station to the RAI stop, Europaplein.

To travel by tram from Central Station, you can take the Amstelveen express tram 51 to the Amsterdam RAI station, taking just 12 minutes or Tram 4 to the RAI Europaplein, which takes 30 minutes.

Make sure you have your attendee badge with you when you collect your pass.

Calling the next generation

Hall 5

The Next Gen Hub programme is a dedicated networking area for students to be inspired for the next stage of their professional career. 

Featuring some of the biggest names in technology and broadcast, the Hub will be a place to meet with industry leaders to get direct advice on shaping careers and to hear from entrepreneurs about how they have developed their business ideas.

In addition, IBC have curated a fun programme of interactive workshops which will look at issues such as diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and offer tips for finding a mentor.

The programme will feature speakers from the BBC, Clear Com, NEP, Google, Startup Boot Camp.

Today at 11:00 the session, Ask me anything: Entrepreneur where students will have the opportunity to ask our panel of entrepreneurs questions on their career, entry to the industry and propose business ideas.  

While at 15:00-17:00 the session: Ask me anything: A career in Broadcasting with Lise Heidal of NEP Norway will see Heidal discuss her career in broadcasting from her beginnings to her current role. Students will have the opportunity to ask her about her day-to-day and career progression for any tips on how to shape their career in broadcasting. 

The programme runs Friday to Monday with a packed schedule.

4K charity fun-run

Saturday 14 September, 7:30am, Amstelpark

The annual 4K 4Charity fun run returns to Amstelpark tomorrow.

The 4km (2.49-mile) run and walk event is held in conjunction with the IBC Show and AWS, raising money to increase diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Since its founding in 2014, the event has raised more than $1 million in gross proceeds for global and local non-profits.
