The Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has developed thousands of industry adopted standards, recommended practices and engineering guidelines.
SMPTE committees have worked to create, approve, revise and remove standards across the industry.
SMPTE has defined the last century of protocols and education for the industry and is set to shape the next generation of standards as the industry evolves further into IP workflows and is shaped by technological advancements.
Advances in Technology
SMPTE conference session: SMPTE ST 2110: Professional Media Over Managed IP Networks will give an overview of the ST 2110 suite, and describe how they can be used within an infrastructure of networked specifications to achieve agile and flexible solutions for professional media live production.
Chaired by FOX Networks Vice President of Engineering and Development Thomas Edwards will be joined in the discussion by Ericsson Senior Vice President Technology, TV and Media Matthew Goldman, SMPTE Fellow Imagine Communications Systems Architect for IP Convergence John Mailhot, SMPTE Director of Engineering and Standards Howard Lukk and EBU Network IP Media Technology Architect Willem Vermost.
IP Showcase - Powering into IP signal flows
SMPTE has joined with the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS), Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), IABM, Media Networking Alliance (MNA), and Video Services Forum (VSF) to support the IP Showcase at the IBC2017 Show.
The IP Showcase is a dedicated feature area aimed at educating visitors on the IP revolution.
Demonstrations, real world scenarios and education sessions offered throughout the five-day programme will confirm that real-time IP for production, playout and contribution is a practical, flexible, efficient reality that is rapidly taking hold in mainstream broadcast operations.
The IP Showcase will highlight the business and creative benefits of IP, the exhibition will provide a unified, industry-wide view of the latest advances in IP technology and how it can add maximum value to the broadcast industry and the individuals and companies that drive it.
Global Update
IBC2017 will host the annual return of The European Digital Cinema Forum - Global Technology Update, industry leaders will join SMPTE members Brian Claypool of Christie, Mats Erixon of Community Hub Foundation, Toby Glover of Deluxe Technicolor Digital Cinema, Andy Maltz of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Radoslav Markov of Audio Video Orpheus, Richard Phillips of Arts Alliance Media, and Julian Pinn of Julain Pinn Ltd.
The session will provide delegates with current information on the latest business and technical advances in global cinema across the value chain — from manufacturing through post production, mastering, distribution, exhibition, and archiving. A networking and drinks reception will follow the presentations.
SMPTE speakers at IBC2017
Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Bill Baggelaar, Netlfix’s Jimmy Fusil and Molinare TV and Film Ltd’s Richard Wilding will be speakers in the session UHD from Lens to Screen: Who’s Calling the Shots?
Julian Pinn of Julian Pinn Ltd. will chair Visualising the Science of High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut will feature SMPTE Fellow and Dolby Laboratories Dave Schnuelle and SMPTE Member and Pixar’s Dominic Glynn.
SMPTE Fellow Stan Moote of the IABM will chair, a panel of speakers including Mike Cronk of the AIMS Alliance for IP Media Solutions, Steve Fish of Turner Broadcasting and Tom Griffiths of ITV, in the session Efficient and Profitable Operations from the IT/IP Revolution.

- Standards quarterly report, from June 2017 summarises the current SMPTE progress across their committees with staff at IBC Partners’ Pavillion on hand to answer questions and discuss current trending topics.
- The SMPTE past century of journal content is available to access through the digital library, a curated resource for professionals to remain informed and up-to-date with the latest technology and industry research.
- Showcasing the past century industry leaders and innovators, limited edition books: The Honor Roll and Honorary Members of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and Magic & Miracles: 100 Years of Moving Image Science & Technology are available at IBC to view and order.
- Available on the stand at IBC will be the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, which has earned merit awards for its content.
Membership opportunities:
SMPTE Director of Membership Roberta Gorman along with Society leadership will be on hand at IBC2017 to discuss membership benefits and the Society’s role in global standards and interoperability.
Prospective members will be able to join, and existing members may renew their memberships on-site.
The SMPTE Student Membership Challenge (SMC), is a fund that pays for a student’s first year of membership, students can join for free.
IBC has six leading partners, including SMPTE who provides insight to assist and ensure the annual convention is relevant, comprehensive, and timely. SMPTE supports IBC’s leadership as an international forum for content creation, management and delivery.
