State of the art: Adaptive bit rate quality monitoring

ABR whitepaper image 3x2

With the move to the increasingly complex adaptive bit rate (ABR) technology for video transport delivery comes a corresponding increase in quality assurance complexity.

Video service providers require more quality evaluation than to only know if a certain number of viewers are unsatisfied with their viewing experience.

More proactive warnings of deteriorating service and descriptions of specific impairments, for example, are needed for rapid corrective actions.

This paper describes both common industry approaches to quality monitoring for HLS and DASH delivery methods as well as video content quality evaluation leveraging MOS, bits per pixel, and other metrics aimed at evaluating if viewers are having a satisfactory viewing experience.
