Tech Papers 2025: In this paper, an overview of the recent advances in standards and industry of 5G is provided.
Abstract
The rapid evolution of 5G technology continues to revolutionize media delivery, with significant advancements in both Advanced Media Delivery (AMD) and 5G Broadcast systems. The core motivation behind AMD, a Rel19 work item, is to enhance the efficiency and quality of media streaming over 5G networks. This involves addressing segmented media objects, ensuring interoperability, and introducing new functionalities to meet the growing demands of modern media consumption. Key technologies driving AMD include common client metadata, server-assisted streaming, multiCDN and multi-access media delivery, DRM integration, enhanced support for QoS as well as MBS enhancements. These innovations aim to provide seamless, high-quality media experiences by leveraging the capabilities of 5G networks. In addition, the ETSI TS 103 720 5G Broadcast profile is extended, the next version is set to be completed for IBC 2025. It incorporates updates from 3GPP Release 18 and 19 and focuses on new functionalities and improvements based on industry feedback. Recently completed and ongoing extensions include the specification of broadcast bandwidth of 6/7/8 MHz for 5G Broadcast, all transmitter and receiver requirements for UHF Band operation (the famous band 108), and finally also time-frequency interleaving to increase coverage and robustness in mobility cases. Still under discussion there are minor extensions to support time-multiplexing legacy broadcast with 5G Broadcast. It also includes a receiver launch profile, as well as recommendations on how to combine 5G broadcast with DVB-I. The integration into tests, trials and commercial services is ongoing and the latest status will be presented. These developments highlight the dynamic nature of 5G distribution, showcasing the continuous efforts to enhance media delivery systems and ensure they meet the evolving needs of consumers and industry alike.
