Comcast's NBCUniversal is cutting jobs in its global streaming technology division, according to reports.
Most of the cuts are at Sky, Comcast's European media arm, although some US-based NBCUniversal (NBCU) employees will also be impacted, according to Reuters.
Business Insider said that Comcast's NBCUniversal is cutting “a few hundred streaming technology staffers.”
The redundancies will reportedly impact NBCU's global streaming technology group. This includes the engineering and quality assurance teams, said Business Insider.
It quoted an NBCUniversal spokesperson saying: "As NBCUniversal and Sky continue to invest in our streaming products and technology, we are proposing changes to our global streaming technology organisation, which will impact some roles. This evolution will ensure we have the right structure and resources in place for future growth and enable us to better serve our customers and partners."
The redundancies come as media companies seek to improve margins in their streaming operations after years of heavy investment in technology and content. They also come soon after Comcast-owned Sky agreed in July to acquire ITV’s channels and streaming business for £1.6bn.
Comcast and Paramount Skydance are also reportedly considering winding down their SkyShowtime joint venture. Discover more here.
