Spotify is to start adding ‘AI Persona’ badges on some artist profiles from September 2026 to give listeners more transparency about whether the artist behind the music was a real person.
The move follows some Spotify listeners voicing concerns about artist profiles that seem human but instead represent AI-generated personas, the music streaming platform said.
Spotify will display the badge on banners and about sections in artist profiles, as well as in search and track rows across playlists.
"The badge signals to listeners that an artist’s identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person," said Spotify in a statement.
The streamer added that it would not include AI Personas in any editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default.
This means that listeners won’t see any music from AI Personas in their personalised recommendations, unless they follow AI Personas.
Spotify will also review artist profiles and identify those whose public identity appears to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities.
Artists whose profiles are flagged by Spotify's review team will reportedly be notified and given an opportunity to self-disclose or appeal.
Spotify said: "True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity. In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are. That’s more essential than ever in the age of generative AI."
