Strictly Come Dancing received the Judges’ Award

At the ceremony, which took place at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Tuesday evening, celebrated screenwriter Jack Thorne was presented with The Outstanding Contribution Award 2022, for creating compelling television over the past few years such as Shameless, Skins and BBC One’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s opus His Dark Materials.

Having been unable to collect his Outstanding Contribution Award in 2020 due to Covid, Graham Norton was also recognised for his 30-year career in TV entertainment.

Red Production Company’s gripping drama It’s a Sin swept up three awards, including for Best Male Actor for lead role Callum Scott Howells, Limited Series and Best Drama Writer for creator Russel T. Davies.

The prestigious Judges’ Award went to Strictly Come Dancing’s 2021 edition, now in its 19th season, for the producer’s fresh approach to reflect its diverse audience, casting its first deaf contestant and the show’s first male dance couple.

Chair of the RTS Programme Awards Kenton Allen said: “All of tonight’s winners are fantastic examples of the outstanding content that has been produced in the UK and has resonated with audiences not only here but globally. A huge congratulations to all of tonight’s winners and nominees; it’s a wonderful chance to recognise the creative and hardworking people behind British television.”

Other notable wins included The Earthshot Prize 2021 (BBC Studios for BBC) for the Live Event award, while BBC Sport received the overall award for Sports Programme for its coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The judges described the winning coverage as “a production of huge scale but with consummate production values, and rich diversity throughout both the action and analysis”.

The BBC took home another award for RTS Network of the Year for BBC One’s ‘sheer quality.’
