The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has launched its new ‘Adoption Showcase’ ahead of IBC2024, spotlighting user stories from six AV1 adopters.
The showcase highlights the benefits achieved by ATEME, Bitmovin, Google, VideoLAN, Vimeo, and Visionular through the adoption of the AV1 codec. Additionally, more adopter stories will be added to the showcase in the coming months, providing further insights into the benefits and applications of AV1.
Dr. Pierre-Anthony Lemieux, Executive Director, AOMedia, said: “The continuing adoption and positive impact that AV1 has had indicates it is playing an important role in the ecosystem. These user stories illustrate the real-world impact of AV1 — whether through streaming services, virtual classrooms, mobile video apps, or chat platforms.”
According to AOMedia, AV1 video helps reduce streaming and storage costs and has even been adopted by Apple’s latest media engine, featured in iPhone 15 Pro models with the A17 Pro chip and Macs equipped with M3 chips. Approximately 95% of Netflix’s catalogue is encoded with AV1; over 50% of YouTube’s catalogue (weighted by watch time) is available in AV1; and more than 70% of Meta Reels (by watch time) on iOS utilize AV1.
Use cases highlighted in Adoption Showcase
The showcased adopter stories demonstrate how AV1 has enabled industry leaders to deliver media experiences while achieving lower bitrates.
- ATEME: By integrating AV1, ATEME has optimised video delivery, enhancing streaming quality and reducing latency for live broadcasts.
- Bitmovin: Bitmovin’s implementation of AV1 has resulted in significant bandwidth savings, enabling smoother and more efficient video streaming for users worldwide.
- Google: Google has leveraged AV1 to improve video playback on the Chrome browser, in Google Meet, on Android, and on YouTube, delivering higher-resolution content with less buffering and lower data consumption.
- VideoLAN: The adoption of AV1 by VideoLAN resulted in the creation of dav1d, an AV1 software decoder, which enables enhanced video quality and playback efficiency on mobile devices without a hardware decoder.
- Vimeo: Vimeo’s integration of AV1 has allowed for high-quality video streaming and storage solutions, benefiting both content creators and viewers with improved visual experiences.
- Visionular: Visionular’s implementation of AV1 technology using AI and machine learning (ML), has enabled better compression efficiency and higher-quality streaming, enhancing the overall user experience.
