IBC SHOWCASE: AV1 debate sees big tech firms join

Speakers from Amazon, Facebook, Google, Netflix and Tencent will take part in an Intel-led session on the challenges of delivering content to video on demand services as part of IBC SHOWCASE.

IBC SHOWCASE, the virtual event that will take place 8-11 September at ibc.org, will feature tech leaders discussing key industry topics during sessions led by Intel, Synamedia, Red Bee Media, Dell Technologies and Microsoft.

Over the course of three sessions on Tuesday 8 September, Intel will explore how visual computing workloads, such as live streaming, VOD, 360-degrees, 8K and smart cities, are growing at an accelerating pace and examine the role played by cloud service providers, communications service providers and enterprises.

The last session, at 17:00 (BST), will be a panel discussion with Amazon, Facebook, Google, Intel, Netflix, and Tencent on AV1 commercial readiness.

During the session, attendees will hear how these companies are facing the growing challenges of video deployments to deliver video on demand and live streaming services. As part of the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), the presenters will talk about the commercial readiness and benefits of AOM/AV1-compliant products and solutions now being deployed, including the Scalable Video Technology (SVT-AV1) production-ready encoder software.

At 16:00, the subject of content delivery will be explored during A Case for Cloud Native CDN. Devesh Gautam from Rakuten and Intel’s Tushar Gohad will consider how video streaming has become an essential service and how CDN providers are continuously challenged to keep innovating in optimising their infrastructure for cost and performance.

Earlier, at 15:00, Evercoast chief executive Ben Nunez and Dusty Robbins of Intel will speak as part of the Volumetric: Capture, Optimize and Stream session. Attendees will hear how Evercoast and Intel are working together to deliver a complete volumetric VOD capture and delivery system that’s accessible at the Edge over 5G on iOS devices with ARKit, and how Evercoast has built an industry-leading cloud software platform to enable the capture, rendering, and streaming of volumetric video.
