Netflix has named Jay Hoag as Chairman of its board, succeeding the streaming service’s Co-Founder, Reed Hastings.
Hoag has served on Netflix's board since 1999 and was its Lead Independent Director for more than a decade.
Netflix announced Hoag’s promotion to Chairman in a regulatory filing, saying that he assumed the role following its annual shareholders meeting on 4 June 2026.
Hoag was an early investor in Netflix and has served as a Founding General Partner at venture-capital firm Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV) since 1995.
According to Netflix, the board selected Hoag as Chairman, “given his valuable leadership and contributions to the board over the years. He brings strategic insights and financial experience to the board, providing unique perspectives on matters such as risk management, corporate governance, talent selection, and management.”
Hoag also serves on the board of directors of Zillow Group and Peloton Interactive. He is on the investment advisory committee at the University of Michigan, the board of trustees of Northwestern University, and the board of trustees at Vanderbilt University. Hoag holds an MBA from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Northwestern University.
Netflix announced in April 2026 that Executive Chairman Hastings would step down from the company to focus on philanthropy and other pursuits.
Hastings has been at Netflix for nearly 30 years, overseeing its evolution from a postal subscription service to an entertainment giant producing its own content.
