MovieLabs, the nonprofit technology joint venture founded by Hollywood studios, is using the occasion of IBC2026 to unwrap version 3.0 of its Ontology for Media Creation (OMC), which is aimed at providing software applications with a common language for describing narrative and production elements and the ability for them to interoperate with a common data exchange format.
MovieLabs first started this effort with a vision of an interoperable future at IBC in 2019, and it released OMC version 1.0 to coincide with IBC in 2021. So, it’s appropriate that it is using this year’s conference, held as MovieLabs marks its 20th anniversary, to launch its next major release.

OMC has been supported by various partners across categories, including scriptwriting, production management, workflow design and orchestration, editorial, and post-production. Version 3.0 expands the OMC and includes the video pipeline from on-set to mastering. It will be available under Creative Commons licensing by the end of 2026.
A panel titled, "MovieLabs 2030: It's no longer a vision – it's the way” is being held today at 13:45 in E102 as part of the IBC Owner & Partners Programme. Leon Silverman, Industry Forum Chair, MovieLabs, is moderating the panel, which features Steve Lapinski of NBCUniversal, Jonathan Tortoro of Warner Bros.
