DeviceAtlas unveils device-level streaming sustainability metrics

DeviceAtlas is set to unveil its Sustainability Properties at IBC2026, device-level energy metadata that lets streaming platforms measure the carbon footprint of viewers’ TVs, tablets and mobiles.

John Leonard, Director of Product Strategy at DeviceAtlas, said: “For the first time, streaming platforms can bring device-level insights on energy consumption into the streaming workflow in a structured, scalable and actionable form.

“Through the combination of regulatory requirements for energy efficiency reporting for TVs and real-time device intelligence, the electricity used by the viewer’s TV while streaming is now measurable by the publisher. We believe this is a whole new level of visibility into the environmental cost of digital content,” Leonard added.  

According to DeviceAtlas, end-user devices account for most streaming-related carbon emissions. The properties are designed to help organisations deepen their understanding of full lifecycle sustainability. They also support compliance with legislative requirements such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). 

The properties for televisions include power usage in both SDR and HDR modes, together with energy class ratings. For mobile devices and tablets, the properties include energy efficiency class, enabling relative comparisons of power consumption across devices accessing services. 

The Sustainability Properties are already available for major streaming platforms including Netflix, CBS and Globo. The category has also been shortlisted for the IBC Innovation Awards 2026.
