Subscribers to US streaming service Peacock nearly doubled in 2023 to hit 31 million.
The figures were revealed as parent company Comcast reported its fourth quarter results this week.
Comcast said that Peacock subscribers grew by three million in the fourth quarter, and that the streaming service’s revenue increased by 57%, surpassing $1.0 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time.
Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Corporation, described Peacock as “the fastest growing streamer in the US.”
He touted the record-breaking NFL Wild Card game on Peacock, describing it as” the nation’s biggest night on the Internet ever”.
Earlier this month, Peacock claimed the January 13 playoff game between Kansas City Chief and the Miami Dolphins was the biggest live-streamed event in US history — delivering an average audience of 23 million viewers. According to Comcast, the Chiefs-Dolphins livestream accounted for 30% of internet traffic during the game.
Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer will exclusively stream on Peacock from February 16 following its theatrical release in July 2023. The 2024 Paris Olympics is also set to stream on Peacock live, with many of the events also airing live on NBC and other NBCUniversal TV platforms.
Comcast is also home to NBC Universal, parent company of NBC, Sky and Universal Studios.
Comcast noted that Universal Studios ranked number in terms of worldwide box office in 2023 with three of the top five films: Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer and Fast X.
For the quarter ended December 31, Comcast’s net income rose 7.8% to $3.26 billion. Revenue increased 2.3% to $31.25 billion.
